The Bottom Line

After a car accident, you may need to visit the NC DMV to replace a damaged or lost driver's license, transfer a vehicle title after a total loss, or register a replacement vehicle. Most NC driver license offices require appointments. Use the search tool below to find the nearest office and plan your visit.

Why You Might Need the DMV After an Accident

A car accident can create several DMV-related needs that people do not always anticipate:

Replace a lost or damaged driver's license. If your wallet or purse was damaged, lost at the scene, or kept as evidence, you may need a duplicate license. The fee is $14 and you can get one at any driver license office.

Transfer a vehicle title after a total loss. When your insurance company declares your car a total loss, the title must be transferred. The insurance company usually handles this, but you may need to sign documents at a license plate agency.

Register a replacement vehicle. If you purchase a new or used car to replace your totaled vehicle, you will need to register it and get new plates.

Report an accident to the DMV. North Carolina law requires you to file a report with the DMV (form DMV-349) if the accident caused injury, death, or property damage over $1,000 and was not investigated by law enforcement.

Two Types of NC DMV Offices

North Carolina separates its DMV services between two types of offices:

Driver License Offices

These offices handle everything related to your driver's license:

  • New and renewed driver's licenses
  • Learner permits and road tests
  • REAL ID upgrades
  • Duplicate licenses (replacing lost or damaged ones)
  • ID cards
  • License reinstatement after suspension

License Plate Agencies

These offices handle everything related to your vehicle:

  • Vehicle registration and renewal
  • License plates (new, replacement, specialty)
  • Title transfers and duplicate titles
  • Tag and tax together (combined registration and property tax)
  • Temporary tags

A small number of offices are full-service and handle both driver license and vehicle services, but most locations specialize in one or the other.
